A Short Ride for Braga

Sporting Braga had a very-short-lived life at the top of the Primeira Liga.

The smaller team had to bow to the masters today as both Benfica and Porto won. While Porto defeated Olhanense, 2-0, at home, Benfica beat no other than Braga. 2-1, final score, and the winning goal came in the dying moments.

So, Braga's run of 13 successive wins in the league is over. They had last lost in Oporto, against FC Porto, 2-3, back in December. Now, their newest loss comes at the hands of the other Portuguese giant.

Perhaps Braga should have gotten a draw from this match.
And most people probably thought they would get it, after Hugo Viana (in minute 82) cancelled Witsel's penalty opener (78).
But Bruno Cesar (90) begged to differ, and made the home fans very happy.

He couldn't make them as happy as they would want, though, because now FC Porto is on top.
But at least Benfica is currently occupying the second Champions League spot.

Highlights from Porto - Olhanense 2-0:

Highlights from Benfica - Braga 2-1:

PSG Still Second

Paris Saint-Germain lost at Nancy Lorraine. In the 89th minute, Mollo scored, with great precision, a goal that saw PSG remain second in the table, even with one more game played than Montpellier.

Most people were probably expecting PSG to take advantage of Montpellier's postponed match, even to a lesser extent than the maximum possible, but they didn't.

Nancy had opened the scoring in the first half, through Bakaye Traore, in the 18th minute, but Sissoko had tied it 5 minutes into the second half.

In hindsight, perhaps a draw would have been the more equitable result.

Highlights:

Milan Stumbles

Catania did not let AC Milan leave with all three points from Sicily.

The team from the southernmost place in Italy that claims the honour of having a Serie A team managed to tie the score at 1-1 early in the second half, and kept it as such till the end.
Robinho scored expertly, in the 34th minute, after Zlatan Ibrahimovic held off two Catania defenders and tricked a third.
But, in the 57th minute, some bad defending by Milan allowed Nicolas Spolli the opportunity to score from 1-2 meters, following a corner kick.

Milan had some chances to win it, afterwards, including one where the ball was cleared off the line, but they only got the draw.
They could watch Juventus pull to within two points of them, unless Napoli has something to prove at the Juventus stadium on Sunday.

Dortmund Should Worry

What a big fuck-up by the leader in Germany!

How can Dortmund lead 2-0, give that up, then come back from 2-3 to 4-3 in the dying minutes, and then fuck that up, too?

This had all the makings of a great game for Borussia, but they did not pay attention to that extra time at the end, at all. And that's not how one wins a title.

Surely, they're not worried about Schalke or the other Borussia, but generally, as soon as one German title contender starts faltering, Bayern is right there to take the title.
Perhaps having one title in a row is too much for Borussia Dortmund, and they just cannot make it two.

And they're probably cursing the three-points-for-a-win rule. One stupid mistake in injury time, one more goal conceded, and you drop two huge points. (It's very unfair, isn't it?)

Man, the German teams (except for Bayern) sure are pathetic most of the time!

A Breeze for Bayern

Although Marseille seemingly had some chances to score, albeit very mild ones, Bayern was a way-too-tough nut for the out-of-shape French outfit to crack.

Bayern scored exactly when they had to, and they made the most out of their opportunities.

Marseille is too weak now to go any further than beating the likes of Inter or Olympiakos. (It's weird that they beat Borussia Dortmund, though!)

Of course, it's quite annoying that the first goal Marseille scored came after a blatant hand-ball.
Goddamn it, you useless referees! Why do the bigger teams always get your help?

If you ask me, I think they won't bring technology into it because it's no accident that the bigger teams always get the (supposedly unintentional) error go their way.

So Far, So Good... Or Is It?

Well, Milan did not screw up the encounter against Barcelona, at the San Siro.

0-0, after the first leg, is not bad, considering Barcelona is still in top shape.
And who knows what could happen at the Nou Camp? If it's 2-2, like in the group stage, Milan would be advancing...

And Allegri's team played really well defensively today, closing down Barcelona.
The Catalan team still had the better chances, but not as many as they usually get.

To boost Barcelona's hopes, too, though, they have not lost at home this season, so there's also that, in addition to the Barca power and prestige.

Thus, it should be a very interesting return leg, with all still to play for.

Two for Benzema, and Then Some

In the words of an official commentator, it looks like "midnight has struck for the Cinderella team". APOEL is almost surely out of the Champions League, after losing 0-3 at home against Real Madrid.

They should have defended, the Cypriots, not gone after the Spanish giants! That was a huge mistake, because it opened their defense.
And Real's endurance levels were much higher.

Benzema with a brace (74, 90) and Kaka (82), after some brilliant play by Marcelo at the end line, put the Madrid team way ahead.

Real left it late, but finished the job.

Chelsea Wins Away from Home!

Benfica did not deserve to lose this match, but lose they did, because Chelsea played very pragmatically.

It was the London club 's first away win in the Champions League this season.

The Portuguese club had some big chances to score. They were either unlucky or foiled by some top-class goalkeeping by Petr Cech (such as Jardel's miss in the second half).
And those missed chances would come back to haunt Jorge Jesus ' men.
(Mata also missed a big chance for Chelsea in the second half, too, by the way.)

In the 75th minute, Torres' cross was perfect for Kalou, who buried it from 6 meters away from goal.

Chelsea goes back to Stamford Bridge with a win and a very big chance to advance to the semifinals, despite Benfica's having two times more opportunities to score.

Braga Did It

Sporting Braga had to hold their nerves in the last moments of their home win against Academica (2-1), but they got the win they needed to go top of the Portuguese Primeira Liga.

Mossoro opened the scoring in the 36th minute, and Lima made it 2-0 in minute 45. Braga seemed to be rolling towards the win, but Academica had a really good second half. However, all the Coimbra team was able to do, despite the pressure, was to reduce the deficit: David Simao, in minute 62, made it 1-2, with a spectacular long-range shot.

Braga's victory sees them going on top, alone, with 58 points.
Porto trails them, on 57, and Benfica now has 56 in third (which would not guarantee a Champions League presence next year for the only remaining Portuguese team in this year 's CL).

Why the Help?

In minute 89 of the Manchester United - Fulham encounter, Danny Murphy was caught in the penalty area of Man. U. and he went down.

Referee Michael Oliver of course refused to even consider pointing at the spot.

The commentators agreed that there was contact with the leg, no contact with the ball, and that there were serious grounds for awarding a penalty. As a matter of fact, one commentator said "That's a penalty."
But people who understand that football is not the sport where everything can happen, and every team can win, anymore can form some opinions as to why teams like Fulham do not get such calls when teams like Manchester United really need results to go their way.
Money talks.

Manchester United will never be troubled by referee calls against them, I firmly believe, until they have the title wrapped up. The referees generally have too little power and courage to upset a conglomerate that wields billions of pounds. In fact, I'm sure clubs like Manchester United have the power to be able to get a friendly referee whenever they need one.

So, really, Manchester City's only hope to get the title is to crush everybody honestly, because they don't have the relations that Manchester United has formed over the last two decades.
But if those losers continue to drop points away from home like crazy, they're going to be out of it soon. Because, even if a team plays honestly and openly against Manchester United, like Fulham seemed to do today, Ferguson's organization is still going to find a way to get the results they need.

This is really borderline over for Manchester City, truly.
If they drop any more points, that's it.
It's still in the hands of Mancini's team, because all they have to do is win all of their games. I think that, if they win all of their remaining games, they will get the goal difference edge, too, even though manchester united is so close. But how the hell is Manchester City going to win four away matches and the home game against United, when they've been sucking away from home for the last three months, and Man. U. will not stop getting wins?

Could Have Shock Leader in Portugal Very Soon

Due to the fact that both Benfica and Porto failed to win this matchday, Sporting Braga has a huge chance to reach the top of the Portuguese Primeira Liga.

Benfica could not win at Olhanense (0-0), while Porto also dropped points at Pacos de Ferreira (1-1).
Porto led, but found themselves scored on with 11 minutes to go.

Braga, who now has 55 points, can win at home against Academica, to overtake Porto (57 points) and Benfica (56).

Braga was close to winning the Portuguese league in 2009-2010, but Benfica eventually took that one away from them. Is it payback time? I'm also referring to payback for Porto, too, who beat Braga in the Europa League final in 2010-2011.

There are still six more matchdays to go, but Braga won their last 12 straight matches in the league!

A Hell of a Week for PSG

Paris Saint-Germain failed to get the win again, in front of their home fans, this time in the Ligue 1.

After being ousted by Lyon in the Coupe de France, on Wednesday, Ancelotti's team is now no longer top in the French league, either. The draw against Bordeaux at home put the Parisian team on only 60 points, the same number of points as Montpellier, but the latter has a better goal difference.

Bordeaux also scored first at the Parc des Princes, when Maurice-Belay opened the scoring in the 77th minute, but the lead only lasted roughly four minutes, as prolific forward Hoarau tied the score with a cheeky shot that squeezed beneath the Bordeaux goalkeeper.

Carlo Ancelotti has some serious work to do, apparently.

Lille has also gotten somewhat closer to the leaders, too. They are on 53 points now.

See highlights here.

Juventus Wins the Derby D'Italia

Inter Milan stumbled to another defeat.

Juventus maintained themselves in the race for the Scudetto by winning at home, 2-0 against Ranieri's team.

After a first half that was very close, Juventus dominated the second half.
Martin Caceres opened the scoring, with a close header, on a corner kick. This was in minute 57.
14 minutes later, Del Piero scored with great finesse, sending Julio Cesar, the Inter goalkeeper, the wrong way.

Towards the end, The Old Lady could have easily made it 3-0.

Juventus remains four points behind Milan.
And Inter remains in eighth.

As an interesting factoid, Claudio Ranieri said after the match that Buffon, the Juventus goalkeeper, was the difference between the two teams. Personally, I think that better composure in front of the opposing goal was the difference. Juventus had that for most of the second half.

The Loser Saga Continues

Roberto Mancini was pissed after the match against Stoke City (1-1, in Stoke). He refused to shake the hand of Stoke's coach, and he did not attend the press conference.

And I don't blame him for being mad at his team's performance.

I mean, really, is the only solution really hypnotizing his players into believing they're playing at home? How the fuck does the team always wins at home - How many of us thought they were down for the count against Chelsea? - but away from home it turns to shit?

8 points out of a possible 24 away from home, lately! That's City's statistic.

Surely they realize that they cannot win the league like this, especially with Manchester United pulling wins out of the hat much like a magician. A rich magician.

How the hell do all of these British challengers that go up against Man. U. lose their ability to play in the second half of the season?
I can think of two possible answers: 1) fucking amateur mentality, 2) many teams have extra incentive from somewhere to keep the challenger down, and therefore play much harder against said challenger.

Not that Manchester City is a great team.
But Manchester United isn't worth significantly more (at least this year) either.

Metalist, Probably Out of Contention

For a while there, Metalist Kharkiv was getting close to the Ukrainian giants, Dynamo Kyiv and Shakhtar Donetsk.

But, lately, they haven't been doing well in the league.
They only got one point from the last two encounters, and are seemingly out of the title race.

Meanwhile, of course, Dynamo kept winning, while Shakhtar hasn't lost a point since a good while back, too.
Dynamo Kyiv is still unbeaten.

There are six more matches to go, besides this one, though.

Tough Nut to Crack

Olhanense seems to be one small Portuguese team that can give a lot of problems to the Portuguese football giants.

1-1 away and 0-0 at home against Sporting, 0-0 at home against Porto, and now another 0-0 at home against Benfica.

Benfica could not even say that they outplayed Olhanense (although they did have a big, big chance to win the game in injury time, through Saviola).

Porto could now put three points between themselves and Benfica again, with a win at Pacos de Ferreira, and even Braga could pass Benfica when they host Academica, on Monday. (Let's remember, though, that Academica recently led Porto at the Estadio do Dragao until the 92nd minute...)

Four Points Gone in Three Days

Mourinho's Real Madrid fucked up again. (Villarreal - Real Madrid 1-1)
A free kick did them in again. (- Marcos Senna, in minute 83, after a Ronaldo opener, in minute 62)

And it came just 72 hours after the Malaga fiasco at the Santiago Bernabeu.

It seems like Real really needs to score at least two goals unanswered before the last ten minutes of the game, and they probably need to concede fewer free kicks, too, to win games.

And what the hell is Casillas doing to earn his wages these days? He really seems to suck in goal recently.

Sure, Real still has a decent advantage, but they better shape up if they don't want to suffer through another do-or-die derby against Barcelona.

On the plus side, at least Villarreal was able to hold Barcelona, too, 0-0 on the 28th of January , so they didn't just take points from Real...
(This is barely a consolation, I know.)

Highlights:

Tottenham Loses Third Position

He, he, guess who's third in the English Premier League now?

It's not Tottenham anymore...

Maybe if they had played more properly against Manchester United...

Anyway, Arsenal won today, 1-0 at Everton, thanks to a Vermaelen goal (in minute 8). By the way, Everton also scored a perfectly valid goal, that was cancelled for offside.
(But that's another issue...)

Tottenham, on the other hand, could not get a win, playing at home against Stoke City. On the contrary, they even had to wait until the third minute of injury time for the equalizer. Man!...
Stoke had gone ahead, in minute 75, through a Cameron Jerome strike.

So, Arsenal now has 55 points, and finds itself in third, while Tottenham slides down to fourth, on 54 points.

Spurs also are now facing a tough game, possibly do-or-die, this coming weekend, against Chelsea, at Stamford Bridge. It should be a good one, because Chelsea also has Champions League aspirations, and a win against Tottenham could bring them to within two points of overtaking them, as well.

CL yes, Coppa Italia no

AC Milan is out of the Coppa Italia.
And they were ousted by their bitter rivals, Juventus Turin.

(Hmm, out of the Coppa Italia, but still in the Champions League...)

Although Juventus opened the scoring, through Del Piero (in minute 28), Milan came back in the second half, with two excellent goals, courtesy of Djamel Mesbah (50) and Maxi Lopez (81).
Because Juventus had won in Milan, 2-1, at the beginning of February, the game went to extra time.

But the game was in Turin, and probably that counted for something because Juve scored the decisive goal, that was enough to take them through, in the first half of extra time.
Vucinic was its author, with a spectacularly powerful shot, from way out, in the 96th minute.

Juventus then hung on, for the next 24 minutes, to eliminate Milan out of the Coppa Italia.
They will face the winner of Napoli - Siena, in the CI final. (Siena leads, 2-1 on aggregate, after the first leg.)
