Down for the Count

Dutch club football quality is going down the tubes, much like toilet waste.

Less than 20 years ago, Ajax Amsterdam was winning the Champions League, and could have easily been considered one of the best 2-3 teams in Europe, if not the best.

But, now, saying any Dutch team has a chance of winning the most prestigious inter-club competition in existence today would get you laughed at by anyone who is not a fan of that one team.

The present Ajax team fits that description, too, but at least they have qualified for the group stage of the Champions League. (Only by virtue of winning the league. They probably would have lost in the play-off round, much like PSV, if they were only forced to take part in it.)

PSV is the focus of this article, however.

They were easily crushed by AC Milan, at the San Siro, after 1-1 in Holland, and have learned the hard way that they can't challenge Italian teams anymore (like Ajax was doing in the mid-1990s).
And Milan is not even close to being the best Italian team out there, at the present time.

But what's all the more surprising is that, three days after that match, PSV Eindhoven players were not even able to take out their frustration on the small, newly-promoted Eredivisie squad Cambuur Leeuwarden. (... A team, mind you, that Zwolle was able to beat by more than one goal, just one week ago.)

0-0 against Cambuur?!...
Not even scoring, in a match that should have returned the Eindhoven team to the top of the standings, albeit probably only provisionally, because Zwolle still has to play on this matchday?!...
If I was a PSV fan, regularly going to see their matches, it's at this time that I would stop giving them my hard-earned money. (You see what I'm saying, PSV fans?)

Highlights from Milan - PSV 3-0 (on 28 August 2013, in the CL qualifying P-O round):

Ukrainian League Again

The Ukrainian Premier League is getting interesting again.

After a defeat (by the score of 1-3) at Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk last matchday, last-season champions Shakhtar Donetsk could have gone back on top with a win, at home, against Metalist Kharkiv (who have just been disqualified by UEFA from the Champions League for match fixing!)

But things are many times not as easy as they may seem.

So was the case for Mircea Lucescu's team.

The game ended 1-1, and Metalist remained on top.
Moreover, the visitors should have had two penalties. In the first half, the team from Kharkiv should have been awarded a penalty kick after a Shakhtar Donetsk clearly held the shirt of one of Metalist's forwards for a long time, impeding him from playing a dangerous cross. And, towards the end, at 1-1, again there was extremely aggressive unpunished blocking by Shakhtar defenders, in their own penalty area.

Shakhtar scored first, with a quickly headed-in cross, but Metalist equalized with 13 minutes remaining, again from a header.
And it looks like the team from Donetsk finally has some solid competition.

Hopefully, nobody is going to run away with this title, at least not for a while.

Tomorrow, Dynamo Kyiv (surprisingly, only sixth in the table right now,) is playing Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk.

Highlights from Shakhtar - Metalist:

Another 3 Points in the Last 3 Minutes

PSG - Guingamp. 2-0.

Okay, seeing that score, one would think "perfectly normal".
Maybe PSG should win such a match by more, but still the final score falls within the scope of the results most people would find normal.

What's not normal, though, and would shock people who look at the stats without having seen the game, is that the two PSG goals came in second half injury time.

90' + 1': Adrien Rabiot.
And 90' + 3': Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Yes, PSG wins again right at the end.

And both goals came due to bad goalkeeping from Mamadou Samassa.

Well, at least PSG is getting the points. And getting closer to the top.

But, oh, man, Laurent Blanc!... If that's the best you can do, just go and coach a lesser team until you know how to coach better!
Don't ruin PSG!

Too much money has been invested, at PSG, in good players, for them to let an inexperienced coach put that money to bad use.
(Promising players can be very easily ruined by bad coaches and a complacent work environment. A very recent example is what's been happening at Manchester City. And this could very easily happen to PSG, too.)

Next match for them: Bordeaux, who might be out for revenge for the French Super Cup outcome.

Highlights:

Lyon Is Slipping

After Real Sociedad ridiculed Lyon again, in the Champions League qualifying play-off round, on Wednesday, the Lyonnais players played another bad match, to reduce what seemed like a very positive start to their season, just a couple of weeks ago, to a distant memory.

This time, OL found itself down 0-2, at half-time, against Evian Thonon Gaillard.

The final score was 2-1, but Lyon is clearly in a slump and they don't look like title contenders. (At least, PSG is getting some good points, but Lyon is not.)

Highlights:

Negredo Teaches Colleagues Style Again

Manchester City played badly again.

But they won. 2-0. (Not a score that accurately reflects the difference in quality between the two teams.)
They won because Hull City strikers can't focus well enough to score goals under too much pressure (or more pressure than they've been used to until now).

With Hull having the best chances and the better of the possession, Manchester City looked destined for disaster again.
Up front, however, Hull proved time and time again to be too forgiving, even though they kept pressing to get goals.

Still, it was the new acquisition who taught his Man. City colleagues about scoring. Yes, Alvaro Negredo, again (in my opinion) the most dangerous man on the pitch, like in the match against Cardiff, had to show his team mates how to get the job done.

Because Yaya Toure's goal was scored really late in a match that had only about 2 minutes of injury time, clearly Negredo's effort was the one that effectively put the Citizens again into the top three.

The most important thing to take from this match, though, is that Man. City's performance in their first match, against Newcastle, seems to have been a fluke, and, as of now, the team from Manchester is performing much like a mid-table team.

How to Win Without Winning

30000 Euros is how much Barcelona CF played the Barcelona public transit company to keep the system running for an extra hour, in order to provide some service, after regular closing hours, to fans going home after the Barcelona - Atletico Madrid super cup encounter, second leg.

They won't regret that decision -- and I really don't know why the hell the Spanish federation is now scheduling so many matches to start at 11 PM, Spanish time - because it's not just this one! - but they must know what they're doing, I guess -- because Barcelona (barely) edged out by Simeone's team to snatch the Spanish Super Cup.

No big thanks to Messi, though.

The Argentinian, now proven to be an infamously bad penalty taker, has missed yet another spot kick. This one, in the 89th minute.

It would have almost surely meant the win for Barcelona, who had much better chances than Atletico in the second half.

The Madrid team, on the other hand, had better chances in the first half, when Victor Valdes saved the Catalan giants more than twice from going down in the goal count. Unfortunately for Atletico, its players didn't have the same spark in the second half, when they became impatient, nervous, and even completely cracked down (such as Filipe Luis and Turan, who both got red-carded by the referee).

So, Barca wins the trophy without actually winning any of the matches.

Nobody can say that Atletico Madrid outplayed them, but I think it's safe to say that Barcelona is no longer the team to beat in Europe. Or in the world, because it's probably the same thing.
I don't know who is, or if there even is one, but a team who wins trophies without winning matches is more lucky than extremely good.

Disappointing

The first great derby of the Premier League, 2013-2014.

Manchester United - Chelsea FC.

New coaches for both sides. David Moyes replaces retired old-timer Alex Ferguson, while Jose Mourinho returns to Stamford Bridge after 6 years.

These stats, as well as the promise of a hopefully close battle between these two giants, to try and win the title, are way more interesting than what has happened during the actual match.

Man. u. fans are going to claim the possibility of getting a penalty or two for some handballs (which, had they been awarded as PKs by the referee, would have been severely criticized by many people, including of course all Chelsea staff). And Chelsea fans would point out the fact that their chances were somewhat more direct and even more penetrating and incisive. Chelsea actually hit the bar in the second half.

Also, it should be said that Mourinho still dislikes Juan Mata, who again did not play, and that he preferred Schurrle to Torres in the first half. (Torres did not come in until the 60th minute, actually, replacing another relatively unknown Chelsea player, de Bruyne. And, based on how he played, Mourinho's decision to keep Torres on the bench was right on the money.)

Chelsea is bound to get better this season. They were very cautious in this match, and I'm sure they weren't the best they can be.

As for Man. U.... Well, they don't necessarily have to be better than their Premier League opponents to get the best results they need to get. So, they'll pretty much always be in the hunt until (close to) the end. Enough said.

A Thin Line Between Lucky and Sucky

Sucky.

That's how one should describe Benfica's performance this season, thus far.

The favourites were very close to be inflicted a defeat, at home, by Gil Vicente Barcelos, which is not a great team by any stretch of the imagination.

It was, for the first almost 70 minutes, a lackluster game, brought to life by Viana's goal, for the guests, in the 69th minute.

And the hosts did very little, by their usual standards, to win that match.

But they got lucky. Extremely lucky.
Minutes 92 and 93 was when Benfica's goals were scored.
Right after equalizing, as a matter of fact, Benfica went on the attack once again, and found the net one more time. Bad defending (and mentality) from Gil Vicente, yes, but basically luck was what did it. It was luck that brought Benfica the first three points of the season.

Highlights:

How Can You Want Titles and Lose to Cardiff?

Well, hey, maybe Cardiff will be in the title chase, too!...

(Ha, ha, ha! Yeah, right! LOL! :D, :), ;), etc., etc.)

I'm running out of ways to laugh at Manchester City.

After replacing Roberto Mancini, and the good-looking win against Newcastle, surely the consensus was that it had been the coach's fault.

But what do you know?
This match shows that there are a lot more things rotten in the Man. City team.

If you ask me, the biggest problem, and a huge black ball for City management, is that they just don't get good players when they shop around.

But I don't mean just during this past transfer window. I mean, since the beginning.
I don't know how the hell they did so well that first year (2011-2012) with that team. They didn't finish the campaign too well, at all, and they got extremely lucky at the end, but they did pull it off.
However, these players: Dzeko, Zabaleta, Hart, Lescott, Toure, and even Aguero, are not top-quality players. No way. Any one of the Barcelona players, alone, for example, is, I would think, better than all of these guys (maybe with the exception of Aguero) put together. How Manchester City can keep a nucleus formed by these players, and believe that they can become a better team, in England or (yeah, right!) in Europe, is laughable.
They need way better players. And just buying the likes of Alvaro Negredo, who is not a top player himself, is most certainly not going to do it for them.

Negredo, as a matter of fact, from what I saw, was probably the best player City played in this encounter. (But that is not a praise of his qualities as a player. He's just a newcomer, and very enthusiastic to prove himself.) I don't know yet 100% what that is saying exactly, about Manchester City and their title chances, but for sure it's not a good omen.

Manchester City should be spending like PSG or Monaco, to achieve something truly great. And they should do so every year. Why aren't they getting guys like Falcao, who was clearly getting a move on? (How in the world was Monaco, a newly-promoted team itself, able to snatch it from teams like Chelsea, who reportedly had been watching and wanting him, and City?...)

Otherwise, if Manchester City starts imitating the spending habits of Arsenal, they won't be able to mount title challenges every year, but will oftentimes be trembling in front of weaklings like newly-promoted teams, just like now, against Cardiff.

What the hell are those sheiks doing over there? Did they just invest a little money, in the beginning, to get people to come to their stadium and spend money on merchandise and tickets, and their airline, and stuff, and now are only looking for profit instead of trophies?
That's not good.

Young Boys Lose It

After 5 (impressive) consecutive wins in the Swiss league, Young Boys Bern finally cracked.

But this should be very disappointing for them that they cracked against one of the teams that probably will be challenging them for the title. That is, if Young Boys can keep up, of course.

And it won't get easier for Young Boys, as they will have to travel to Basel next.

Speaking of said team, with Basel dropping points again, Grasshopper Zurich will, of course, be the most confident team after this, the sixth matchday in the Super League.

Still an extremely long time to go, though.
(The Swiss Super League consists of 36 matchdays.)

Dropped Points for PSV, Too

PSV no longer has a perfect record in the Dutch Eredivisie. Thanks to Heracles Almelo, a team PSV beat 5-1 in the corresponding encounter last season.

The hosts went 1-0 up very early, in the 6th minute, through Lerin Duarte.

PSV did not play too well - probably thinking of the return leg against AC Milan, in the play-off round for the Champions League - and were quite lucky to end the match at 1-1, after Park Ji-Sung showed very good persistence in the opposing penalty area, practically forcing a goal from a ball that could have ended anywhere. This was 4 minutes before the end of regulation time.

Zwolle remains the only team with maximum points. They beat Cambuur, 2-0, at home, one hour after the PSV match.

Highlights from Heracles - PSV:

First Really Notable Effort from Reims in a Long Time

Reims' period of glory, at top level in French football, has long passed. The last time they won the French title was in 1962.

And yet Stade Reims holds six national title wins, only one less than Olympique Lyonnais.

But there was no doubt, however, that Lyon was the favourite to win the encounter on this third matchday of Ligue 1.
Especially because Lyon was leading in the standings, and had basically breezed past Nice and Sochaux on matchdays 1 and 2.

Reims, though, proved a much harder nut to crack.

They defended well, played the counter-attack card properly, and were lucky as well.
Yes, luck must be acknowledged because Lyon had a penalty, and thus could have scored in the 72nd minute. But Grenier missed, and the score remained 0-0.
Then, only 4 minutes later, Fortes scored an extremely spectacular diagonal goal from the edge of the penalty area, and that was all in terms of goals.

Reims now has the same number of points as Lyon, while Marseille remains the only team with maximum points (pending Saint-Etienne's match at Lille tomorrow).

Highlights:

Out of the Top Three at the Death

A few more seconds, and FC Basel would have made it into the top three, in the Swiss Super League, again.

They were leading, 1-0, at Luzern, thanks to Giovanni Sio's goal in the 32nd minute, and had a better goal difference than Luzern, too.
So, they would have been second for at least a few hours, and either that or maybe third after the matchday concludes.

But they conceded the equalizer to FC Luzern in the 93rd minute (Dimitar Rangelov), and thus remain two points behind them.

Young Boys and Grasshopper play tomorrow.

AC Milan, the Arsenal of Italy

Berlusconi's Milan.

Just like Arsenal, from the English Premier League, a team previously used to always go for the title, but which in recent seasons apparently decided of its own accord to relax its ambitions drastically. Very much like the Gunners, the Rosso-Neri also seemingly said "forget the trophies, we want to get as many points as we can with the cheapest players we can keep at the club". That is, while at the same time pretending to the fans that they still have some chance to make it to the top.

But, really, what can be expected of a team which, when they play a recently newly-promoted team, have to face, and struggle against, the most famous player on the pitch (because he is playing for the other team)?!?!!

Yes, indeed, the best and most well-known player on the field of play between Hellas Verona and AC Milan was playing for Verona!

I'm talking about Luca Toni, of course, who not only showed up but also made significant efforts to show the Milan team who's who, and scored the two Verona goals, both of them headers.

Verona - Milan 2-1.

And, just like its owner, Milan is (already) in trouble.

Another Screw-Up

What a disappointing start of season for PSG under new general team manager Laurent Blanc!

Still, luckily for them, nothing is lost yet. (And, actually, they have already won the Super Cup, against Bordeaux.)

But only two points out of six?... That's not what fans expect to see from the team with the most money in Ligue 1.

And this time it was even worse than the first matchday.

PSG could not defeat Ajaccio, at home.

Moreover, they were down, 0-1, until the 86th minute, when Cavani equalized with a brilliant rocket from the edge of the penalty area.

Guillermo Ochoa, the Mexican goalkeeper, did wonders in the Ajaccio goal, to prevent the defeat. Still, the post and the bar helped.
PSG finished with close to 40 shots, but saw only one go in.

I guess they can also talk about lack of luck, in this one.

Highlights:

Jesus, Just (Let Him) Go Already!

Why do Portuguese teams hold onto their coaches, like wild carnivorous animals to their prey?

Some are not worth holding onto.

I think Jorge Jesus has failed to win enough trophies at Benfica, many at the last moment, that somebody should just fire him.

Or, if they're too stupid to fire you, Jorge, have some pride, man! Resign! You ain't gonna win shit with Benfica!
(Maybe an insignificant trinket here, an insignificant trinket there... But never a big trophy, like the Liga Sagres. You're done!)

The game, on the first matchday, against Maritimo, was a disaster for Benfica SL.

Not only did they fail to win, but they failed to impress, as well.
And the only goal they scored, to make it 1-1, came after a huge blunder by a Maritimo defender.

With such a lousy start from their best opponent, Porto is going to move ahead very quickly...

Highlights:

What a Waste of Good Players!

Looking at the players who scored on the first matchday of the English Premier League, I see some previously great talent, like Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Wilfried Bony.

Van Wolfswinkel scored the tying goal for Norwich, against Everton, and Bony scored Swansea's goal against Man. U.

These guys played for Sporting Lisbon and Vitesse Arnhem, respectively, arguably teams that had better chances of winning any silverware than Norwich and Swansea. And they were great there. Both top goalscorers for their respective teams.

So, I can't help but think: What the hell were these guys thinking, going to these teams?
Norwich and Swansea?!?!?!... Come on!! They're better players than that!
Are they morons? Or are they that desperate to play in the most publicized league on Earth?

Wow! Konyaspor

The curse of those fixed matches must be catching up with Fenerbahce, fortunately for football as a whole.
(I'm talking, of course, about the matches for which they got in trouble with UEFA. ...And who knows if there were more they didn't get in trouble for?)

On the first matchday of the Turkish Super Lig, the team from the Asian part of Istanbul had to play a newly-promoted team.
Konyaspor had succeeded in being promoted to the first league, after finishing sixth (!) in the second. They achieved their promotion via a play-off system between places 4-7. (It should be mentioned that the team that finished in 3rd, in the Turkish TFF First League last year, was excluded from play-offs.)

Fenerbahce took a 2-0 lead early in the first half, and saw their goalkeeper save a penalty, as well, at 2-0.

But the humiliation still came.

The minnows managed to score 3 goals in 11 minutes (between the 76th and the 87th), and sunk the ambitious guests.

What a start for the Turkish 2013-2014 season!

Highlights:

What the Fuck is Arsenal Doing?

Why do people still go to see this team of losers playing?

Arsenal played properly only for about 6 minutes, in their season opener, and then it was all kudos to Aston Villa Birmingham.

What kinds of methods is Wenger using? Still from the late '90s, probably? Why isn't the Arsenal management taking measures to improve a team that is slowly transforming into garbage, much like Liverpool FC seems to be doing?

One good goal, scored by Giroud. And a few chances, at 1-2, which also went the other way, to show just how deficient the Gunners are in the finalizing department. That's all this team had in this match.

On the other hand, Aston Villa, a team that could have been relegated last season, showed much better quality. For the first 65 minutes or so, actually, they had all the best chances, too, except for that one goal by Olivier Giroud.

And, so, it looks like another pathetic season for the London team.

A lot of members of the Arsenal business should just pack their bags and quit, over there.
After Henry left, it's been nothing but disappointments for Gunner fans.

If I was among them, I would stop wasting money (- and they're charging the most for tickets, out of all the teams in Premier League, they are -) to see Arsenal. And their pathetic lack of consistency.
(You would never see Manchester United lose, at home, 3-1, in their season opener. By comparison, that's a clue that Arsenal is clearly no longer a top team in the Premier League.)
