Nice, Unexpected Comeback

I gotta say, I never expected this.

Manchester United was up 8 points, and they were playing Wigan and Everton, teams they traditionally beat easily.
Well, I don't have a perfect idea of why they dropped points to Everton, but, anyway, United sure screwed themselves!

And, you know, this year, Ferguson's team has been absolutely pathetic against good international teams: Benfica, Basel, Ajax and Athletic Bilbao.
But the Premier League is different. United gets these titles even when they're not the best team in the league.

However, United clearly is a very shitty team this season. They can't win many games that they play fairly.
Of course, they should win the remaining games, against Swansea and Sunderland. No matter what the cost.
But the big question is, what if Manchester City beats Newcastle?
(They should beat QPR, at home, on the last matchday, too, if they're that good. And Manchester City 's getting two wins in the last two matches means United has to get at least two 5-0 wins, or something that amounts to being at least ten goals better than their opponents. This is not something that Man. U. cannot arrange, I'm sure, but what if City gets a 4-0 win, or something, in one of their two matches?)

What I'm saying is, basically, that Manchester City should win this title, but the game against Newcastle is not going to be easy.
Manchester United is probably going to try to provide additional incentives for Newcastle to try their best to not lose that game, I believe. Not that Newcastle doesn't want to win, but... that's the way it works sometimes in football.

As for the match today, in itself, all that can be said is that Man. U. was just pathetic. They only had one chance, in minute 2. After that, it was all City, even when United needed to score.

Kompany's goal was lucky, unexpected and surprising. Bad marking from Smalling left the powerful City player free to head in the ball from just 5 meters away, in first-half injury time. It was a disappointing goal for Man. U. to concede. But then the team was disappointing throughout the entire course of this match.

And I'm sure all United fans would agree, after seeing this one, that making one single goal worth 2 extra points is unfair.

See highlights here.

Man. City - Man. U. -- New Title Race?

I think there could still be a race between these two only if Manchester City beats United.

Manchester United is going to beat Swansea and Sunderland, in the last two matches, I'm sure, and I would bet on it.
And they might probably be working on the referees in the match against their city rivals, too, I think.

However, if City does manage to pull the upset, they could have an advantage of possibly 8-10 goals on United. All United needs to do is pull a couple of 6-0 wins, and they might still be good for the title.

Let's not forget, also, that Manchester City has to go to Newcastle, where Man. U. lost 0-3, and Pardew's team still has Champions League ambitions...

But, let's see first what happens at the City of Manchester (Etihad) Stadium, before I go back to posting more Premier League fixtures/results.

(And, ha, ha, I bet the United management is now ruing the way they approached the match against Wigan...)

Lille Ruins PSG's Hopes

With four matches left, PSG finds itself 5 points behind leaders Montpellier.

Montpellier was good enough to win at Toulouse on Friday, 1-0, but the Parisians dropped all three points at Lille.

Despite going 1-0 up through Pastore's goal, four minutes after the restart, Ancelotti's men could not hold on to the lead. They surrendered a penalty, transformed into a goal by Eden Hazard in minute 71, and soon afterwards, they conceded another one, after a brilliant pass by the same Hazard - Roux (79) the scorer.

PSG has been playing badly of late, and there are no signs that they could pull a perfect run in their last four matches. But, even if they do so, Montpellier would likely have to lose two of theirs, which also looks unlikely.

Wow, Montpellier could be champions! Finally, a small team can win one of the big leagues.

Porto Wins the Title in Portugal

Benfica could not beat Rio Ave today.

This means FC Porto are the new Primeira Liga champions!

The rules of the Portuguese league state that FC Porto has the tiebreaker over Benfica (- direct matches -) who is the only team that could still end up tied on points with the Oporto giants.

So, Porto wins this title without even playing. I'm sure they're having some fun at the expense of Benfica's humiliating failure.

In hindsight, Porto was clearly the best team, though, beating Benfica and Braga (and Maritimo, which makes it three of the other four from the top five) away from home! That's just excellent form!

This is Porto's 26th title. (Benfica has 32 overall.)

Okay, Ajax Is Going to Win, But Who'll Be Second?

Ajax got yet another win, by beating disappointing Twente, 2-1, in Enschede. They continue to have a six-point lead over Feyenoord.

Speaking of the team from Rotterdam, they got the other impressive win of this matchday, by downing former long-term leaders AZ Alkmaar, 1-0, at home. Now, Feyenoord is second, finally, and its players are looking at Champions League football next season if only they keep this run going.

PSV managed to take over third, because both Alkmaar and Twente (who has a better goal difference than PSV, by the way) lost this matchday.

Heerenveen, who also won, is now up to fifth, while Twente drops to sixth. And Alkmaar, of course, is fourth now.

Damn Penalties!

I guess the people who are looking at football events solely from the perspective of money can be happy to see the owners of the stadium where the Champions League final is going to take place participating in said final.

Bayern was very lucky to achieve this feat.

But I think I can safely say that Real Madrid was never second-best to Bayern. Not in Munich, where they lost, 1-2, and not at the Bernabeu, where they could not win the penalty shootout. (The Germans always do well at penalties!...)

After only 14 minutes, Real was up 2-0. They were even more convincing than Barcelona, yesterday, when they went up 2-0 against Chelsea.

So, then, what happened with the Spanish giants, again?
Most probably, cockiness. They thought they would have a very easy match, after going up two goals, but the opponents were just having a temporary bad spell.

The penalty that Robben converted was a very soft one, true, but then the Real penalty kick seemed a little harsh on Bayern, too.

Getting back to Real's failure to reach the final, one could blame this on Mourinho. But, unlike Guardiola, Mourinho at least managed to keep the team in the tie until the end.
When the penalty kicks started, Mourinho was not the man to blame anymore.

So, then, are the guilty ones Ronaldo, Kaka and Ramos? Very likely, yes, they are.
Seeing how much money they make, they have to have better nerves in such moments. But they, especially Ramos, were truly pathetic!
I wonder, did they insist on taking the spot kicks, or were they designated penalty takers?
And, wow, three misses out of four? (That's one bad penalty-kick team performance.)

But what about looking at this from the German perspective, you may say? Well, if I do that, there's not that much to say. I can say that, considering that they cannot seem to be able to beat Borussia Dortmund, Bayern is not a team that deserves to win the Champions League.

Oh, and Robben really should practice his finishers more. This is the umpteenth time he's missed a real sitter!

Barca, Out!

Barcelona was eliminated from the Champions League by a very lucky and perseverant Chelsea.

Guardiola's team pressed from the very beginning, but good defending from Chelsea kept the score at 0-0 for more than half an hour.

Then, at the 35-minute mark, the breakthrough finally happened. Busquets was the unlikely scorer of a goal that had seemed imminent for a long time.
Two minutes later, John Terry showed his ugly side and got a red card for hitting a Barcelona player.
Iniesta, in the 43rd minute, timed his run to perfection, to slot the ball home past Cech, following a perfect pass by Messi. 2-0.

And, so, it seemed like Barcelona was going to have an easy game.

But, only three minutes later, and again in first-half injury time (just like at Stamford Bridge one week ago), Chelsea hit on the counter. Lampard saw Ramires' intelligent run, and the latter finished the opportunity like a high-class striker, chipping the goalkeeper from the edge of the penalty box.

That goal, as spectacular as it was, could have had very little importance, though, if only Messi had scored his penalty, early in the second half.
In the 48th minute, Didier Drogba committed a foul in his own penalty area, and the Argentinian stepped up in minute 49 to take the spot kick. But he put it too high, and the ball rebounded back from the crossbar.

Barcelona continued pressing, and they hit the woodwork again, through Messi, with ten minutes to go.

Just when it seemed like the game was destined to end 2-1, Torres managed to catch hold of the ball, alone against Valdes, rounded the Barcelona keeper, and put the ball into the empty net. It was all over.

Chelsea succeeded in eliminating Barcelona even without completing two perfect games. I'm referring especially to the second match. But they were extremely close to being perfect.
As for Barcelona, I guess their finishing needs some better efforts at the present time.

Milan From Bad to Worse

Not per se. Drawing against Bologna is not worse than losing against Fiorentina. But being three points behind Juventus is worse than being just one point behind.

What's going on with Milan?
A month ago, they couldn't stop winning. Now, they can't stop dropping points.

After Ramirez's goal, in the first half (in minute 27), Milan should have had an equalizer late in the second half, when Ibrahimovic was wrongly judged to have been offside.
So, Milan had a goal disallowed erroneously. Would that have turned the game around? (Maybe...)

The same player, though, Ibrahimovic, finally found the back of the net almost at the death, when he tapped in a ball that completely wrong-footed the Bologna goalkeeper.

And Milan also did have a header go just slightly past the goal post, in the very last seconds of the game.

But the fact was they dropped two more points, and Juventus seems to be unstoppable at the moment.

Milan is on 68 points now, while Juventus managed to reach 71, by crushing AS Roma, 4-0, at the Juventus stadium.
The Scudetto race is not over yet, but it seems more and more like it would be won by The Old Lady (Juventus).

How Pathetic!

Galatasaray dominated the Turkish league this year. They ended the regular season with 9 more points than Fenerbahce. And they started the play-offs well, too, with an away win at Besiktas.
(Also, it should be mentioned that they were able to hold the Fener team, 2-2, on their own stadium, just a few matchdays ago.)

So, it's inexplicable how they could fuck up this game.
But that's exactly what happened.
Fenerbahce won, 2-1, at the Turk Telecom Arena.

Galatasaray played better. They certainly had most of the chances after Ziegler's goal, in the 17th minute. But, at least twice, the ball just would not go in.
After Inan's free-kick equalizer, Galatasaray should have been 2-1 up in a matter of minutes, but Fener goalkeeper Demirel pulled off an amazing point-blank save against Yilmaz's powerful finisher.
And, wouldn't you know it, just a few minutes later, the Galata defense was caught way too advanced, and Stoch punished their inadequate positions.

There was one more header from the home team that could have made a difference, not long after the 80th minute, the minute when Fenerbahce took the lead, but this was a day when everything went badly for Galatasaray.

They still lead in the standings, but Fenerbahce is now only 2 points behind. And Terim's team still has to go to the Kadıköy, on the last matchday. And there are four more matches left, for both teams, including that one.

Sporting Kansas City Finally Stumbles

After getting 7 wins out of 7 matches, to start the season, Sporting Kansas City finally lost one.

But it's surprising that they lost to the bottom team in the Western Conference, Portland Timbers. What in the world is that about?

And how did they lose, you ask?
An own goal.
A spectacular own goal. But being spectacular is nothing. Check out the goal! The defender who scored in his own net either got (stupidly) scared by his own teammate, or he does not belong on a football pitch. This is blooper stuff!

Wow! Chance Myers... What the hell, man?

And Kansas City could not come back after this.

They had the second best start in MLS history, but that's all done now.

Highlights:

Real Finally Does It!

After so many unsuccessful matches of late against their perennial rivals, FC Barcelona, Real Madrid finally got a win in such an encounter.

And it might just be one that is totally design to humble and humiliate Guardiola's men.
Here was a game that, given Barcelona's recent form against Real, was expected to end with a home win and to put Barca within one point of the Madrid giants, in the league.
That would have made the title chase a very, very close and exciting battle.

But Real's win, 2-1 at Nou Camp, means that Real is 7 points ahead of Barcelona now, in the standings, and they only need six more points to win the title. That's two wins in their last four games.
Not hard, but Real should probably be pushing to achieve the record number of points in a season (by winning all four games) and take something else away from Barcelona.

But, getting back to the game, the first two goals - Khedira's, in the 17th minute, and Sanchez's, in the 70th - were very scrappy affairs. Mistakes at the back, first by Puyol, and then by the entire Madrid defense (which was actually more unlucky than unprepared), led to lucky bounces and lucky goals.
However, Ronaldo's goal was much better. Coming only 3 minutes after Alexis Sanchez's equalizer, the goal consisted of a great pass by Ozil and a finishing move of the same quality by the Portuguese forward, despite great efforts from Valdes to make himself big in front of Ronaldo.
When watching that goal, at first I thought Ronaldo was playing the ball a bit rashly there, so I was somewhat surprised to see it go in. But, in hindsight, probably the quickness was too much for Valdes, too, because who knows if he wouldn't have been able to parry the ball if Ronaldo had waited a little more time to apply the finish.

Also, I have to say, Mourinho, as a coach, again shows great class in crucial moments. He was able to finally show the world that his team can outplay Barcelona in a direct fixture.

It's not over, though. (Not the title chase, yet, and not Mourinho's season, either.)

Borussia Dortmund Champion!

For the second time in two years, the yellow and black outfit from Dortmund is crowned supreme leader of the Bundesliga.

For sure, Borussia deserved it this year, too.
The two games against Bayern, who are seemingly always fighting for the title, proved that Borussia is, indeed, better than Bayern, who is clearly better than the rest.

In the last few matches, alongside Bayern, Borussia Dortmund also had to face Schalke and Borussia Monchengladbach, the third- and fourth-placed teams, respectively. And they won all of these matches.
It's very impressive, really, if you examine Dortmund's latest efforts, thoroughly.

The win against the second Borussia, 2-0 at home, was a good team effort, but it seemed like the Monchengladbach team clearly was never going to leave with the three points from the Westfalenstadion. That's not a bad thing, of course. It's just that the drama was minimal.

After 60 minutes, Klopp's team had already scored the two goals that would mark their win, through Perisic (in minute 23) and Kagawa (59).

So, with two games left, Borussia becomes 2011-2012 champion of Germany. Bayern is more than 6 points behind, still. (And that's it for the German league this year.)

Impressive Chelsea for Once

I don't think many people even believed Chelsea could beat Barcelona, regardless of the fact that the match was in London.
Mourinho himself expressed big doubts about Chelsea's ability to contain Barca.

But Chelsea won the first leg.

I would say they were impressive. But not because they were better than Barcelona.
Chelsea was impressive because its players countered everything Barcelona did very, very well. They defended cohesively, and they were dangerous on the counter.

The goal came a little bit out of nowhere, and two minutes into first-half injury time, but Drogba did very well to score there.

Barcelona had way more possession and better chances. But Chelsea got significantly more, in the end, from the chances they had.
Guardiola's men even had a couple great chances to tie the score. However, their finishing lacked that extra quality.

The tie is far, far from over, though. The return leg, at Nou Camp, will surely feature an even more attack-minded Barcelona.

Real Has Problems Really Late

Real Madrid never beat Bayern in Munich.

They did quite well today, though. Well, until the 89th minute, that is.

Even though Bayern opened the scoring very early (Ribery 17'), and kept the advantage until half-time, Mourinho's men did not lose their cool. They showed just how dangerous they can be in the 52nd and 53rd minute, when Ozil put the ball in the back of the net after a prolonged attack and some very altruistic play from Ronaldo.

Gomez, who had missed a big chance about a quarter of an hour before finally scoring, netted the last goal of the match, but he could consider himself a little lucky to have scored that goal. He hit the ball with his knee.

1-2 still is not that bad of a result for Real. But 1-1 would have been way, way better. Going home with a 1-1 away result would have allowed them to focus more on the Barcelona match at the weekend.

Mourinho usually does good coaching, but this year a lot of things have gone against him.

I think many people, including me, wonder if his team can achieve what Barcelona has been achieving with ease lately.
But hey, if there's one team to dethrone Barca, at the moment it can only be Mourinho' Real.

It remains to be seen.

PSG Still Behind

Paris Saint-Germain could not take advantage of Montpellier's defeat at Lorient earlier in the day.

Four hours before PSG's match ended, Lorient had beaten the leader, 2-1, at home. And, by the way, Montpellier scored the last goal in that game, not any of the first two.

No wonder, then, that PSG started the game at Auxerre very confidently. But, after going up one goal quite early (through Nene, in the 23rd minute), PSG faltered very late, allowing Le Tallec to score a somewhat preventable goal, with 4 minutes left in regulation.

This stopped Ancelotti's team from drawing level on points with Montpellier Herault, but Montpellier's form can certainly give the PSG men some confidence.

American Derby

Sporting Kansas City beat Real Salt Lake in the biggest MLS derby of the season so far.

That's because Sporting KC was top of the eastern division, without having dropped a single point, while Real SL was leading the west with only one defeat in six matches.

But the Kansas City team was to remain the only team with an unblemished record.

Collin scored, after 63 minutes, to lift the hosts to their sixth win in six matches.

And they also had a goal called off in the first half...

Impressive! But it's still very early. And MLS also has play-offs.
