Revenge for Last Two World Cups

The United States national team finally got revenge on Ghana for putting them out of the last two World Cups.

In 2006, in Germany, The United States finished bottom in their group, with one point, after a 1-2 defeat against Ghana on the third matchday - Dempsey 43' / Dramani 22', Appiah 45' + 2'. Considering that Italy would go on to beat The Czech Republic, they needed to win that match to advance.

In 2010, in South Africa, United States qualified from the group stage, winning it even, but they encountered Ghana in the very next round, and they lost again by the same (overall - extra-time included -) scoreline - Donovan 62' (pen.) / Boateng 5', Gyan 93' [- E.T.]

So, they were probably really looking forward to give their best, if not in all matches at this World Cup, then particularly in the match against Ghana, above all.
(FIFA can really draw, them ties, so as to make the viewers' mouths water, sometimes, can they not? How the hell do they pick them so juicy, so often?)

This time, in 2014, The United States pressed right from the get-go, and went ahead through the earliest goal at this final. Again, Clint Dempsey got on the score-sheet. Minute: 1.

Then the match turned into a stalemate, but just when it was looking desperate for the Ghanaians, with less than ten minutes left to go, a defensive hole appeared for once in the American defense, and Marseille's Andre Ayew made it 1-1, following a quick counter move.

But the U.S.A. team, some might say lucky on this particular day, got another one extremely quickly, after less than 4 minutes following Ayew's equalizer. John Brooks scores, with a header, on his World Cup debut, and punished Ghanaian carelessness.

Nothing more to report after that.

The Golden Substitution

A grand total of two shots on goal. That includes both American and Panamanian shots - although it should be mentioned that the two mentioned above were both American - and thus it becomes clear that the Gold Cup final this year was a most cagey affair.

The hosts kept pressing for the win, and Panama kept defending, for most of the match.

United States had by far the most possession of the ball, and both Landon Donovan (at 0-0) and Eddie Johnson (at 1-0) missed huge opportunities to score. Both forwards placed the ball wide of goal, so they're not included in the two on-goal chances.

To their credit, Panama players did a great job of blocking persistent American attacks, but were never a dangerous attacking force, not even at 0-1.
And they had no clear chances of scoring.

Klinsmann (who was banned from sitting on the bench, due to the incident during the Honduras semifinal) and his coaching staff performed an excellent switch when they introduced Brek Shea, in the 68th minute.
42 seconds later, a weak diagonal cross was missed by every Panamanian defender, as well as by Landon Donovan, who was inches (or cm, if you will,) away from touching it, and the substitute was there to push it in cleanly, one meter away from Panama's goal line.

How the Panamanians, who had defended almost flawlessly prior to that, failed so abjectly in blocking a seemingly inoffensive ball is to be analyzed on many sports shows, for sure.
But, as unexpected and auspicious as the goal was, the fact remains that that was the only well-taken chance of a long tactical battle between the two squads, and it will remain in history as the winner of the 2013 Gold Cup.

Brek Shea had also scored the only goal in the United States - Costa Rica match, on July 16. And he was a substitute in that match, as well.

So, The United States wins their 5th Gold Cup. First since 2007.
Mexico still leads, with 6.

Next Gold Cup is to take place in 2015.

Surprising, or Not So Much?

No Mexico in the Gold Cup final?

That would probably constitute a surprise, under normal circumstances.
But given the squad Mexico brought to this year's competition it's not really such a big surprise that they lost to Panama. Twice.

There's only one positive thing, which is that the Mexican forwards got some saves - two - out of Panamanian goalkeeper Penedo (who has not saved much in this tournament until now).

As a matter of fact, talking about the second save, Isaac Brizuela should really have scored with that chip of his (in minute 80).
Even though he had milliseconds to shoot, he was alone with the keeper. That would have made it 2-2.
But, seeing as how he is a reserve player, people won't be too harsh on him.
It should have been Chicharito there, not Brizuela.

Mexico's defense disappointed, too.
Everyone was left stunned when Ramon Torres scored his header, 16 minutes into the second half.

But, in all honesty, United States and Panama have been the two best teams in this tournament.
And the only two unbeaten.

So, the final USA - Panama makes sense more than the Mexicans might like to admit.

Highlights:

Five out of Five

The United States of America national football team won again.

The win against Honduras makes it 5 wins out of 5 matches played. (And they also won 4 of those 5 by more than one goal difference.)

Jurgen Klinsmann is doing good things with this team.

They're scoring a lot of goals, too: 19 already, before the final.

Honduras was not the easiest team to defeat, either. Let's remember that, in World Cup qualifying, Honduras inflicted the only defeat USA suffered thus far in the group-of-six final round-robin.

Landon Donovan got two goals, on the night of his 150th cap, which puts him right up there with Chris Wondolowski; both strikers have scored five.

The result is thoroughly deserved, too. I'm sure most people wouldn't argue.

Also, another plus for United States in this competition is the way in which they respond to surprise conceded goals. (And they've let in at least one goal in every match, except for the Costa Rica one.) They always score again.
Who knows what could have happened if they had not made it 3-1 right after the Hondurans pulled one back?

So, The United States is the clear favourite for the final. But Panama should be a fine opponent, especially now that they can almost touch the trophy.

From Best Defense to Worst Attack

For more than 260 minutes, Costa Rica had conceded zero goals.
After the Honduras loss on the third matchday, they even had the best defense in the competition.

But, after they missed that big chance against The United States and Shea scored on the counter-attack, Los Ticos completely lost their good form.

Not only did they end up losing the match to the Americans, but they scored zero goals after that and were eliminated by their opponents in the following round, the very next match.

Honduras, Costa Rica's enemy in the fourth quarter-final, and a team that seems to always eliminate the Costa Ricans when they catch them at the Gold Cup, did not play significantly better, but they had more pragmatic players.
And they scored one unanswered goal, early in the second half, surprising the Ticos and then preventing them from scoring the equalizer.

So, Costa Rica went from having the best defense in the group stage to having the worst attack in their last two matches at the tournament.

Thus, Honduras is now due to face The United States in the first semifinal at the Dallas Cowboys New Stadium on Wednesday.
And the only group left with two participants still in the competition is the one that started the QF stage with two participants to begin with: Group A.

USA Thrash Belize

Belize was tied on goals with the United States for only 12 minutes, and behind only one goal for just 26.
And the United States could have scored 3-4 more, easily.

Yes, the defeat was crushing.

How did Belize get to the Gold Cup, one may ask?

Well, they did so through the UNCAF Championship, or the Copa Centroamericana, as it's also called.
They finished fourth.
By beating Nicaragua, 2-1, with the winner scored in injury time, they succeeded in overtaking Guatemala and finishing second in the first group (which Costa Rica won, with Nicaragua finishing bottom). That meant Belize could play in the semifinals of the competition, which of course they lost, 0-1, to Honduras, the eventual runners-up.

But the sports development methods in Belize are quite poor, according to a Belizean. So, even though they should have made improvements for this Gold Cup participation, probably they regressed a bit.

Hopefully, the other matches they play won't see them on the losing side of such crushing defeats, again.

4th Title for the Galaxy

The Los Angeles Galaxy is now the top most successful club in Major League Soccer. (Well, they're tied with DC, 4 titles each, but they do have the most trophies, too, now.)

LA, led by footballing giants like David Beckham, Robbie Keane and Landon Donovan, came back from a 0-1 deficit, to overcome Houston Dynamo, 3-1, at The Home Depot Center, in Carson, California.

Calen Carr put the feisty Texan team ahead, just before the break, with an inspired powerful shot from close distance, that snuck in underneath the bar.

But, fifteen minutes into the second half, Omar Gonzalez showed great class, by heading in a Juninho cross that really could have gone anywhere.
That started the downfall for the Houston outfit. Only five minutes later, but not before Keane had a goal disallowed by the referee, another ball contested by Gonzalez sparked the incident that convinced the referee to award a first penalty in this match for the Galaxy. The penalty kick was converted into a goal by Landon Donovan (following his usual PK ritual).

The second LA penalty came deep into injury time, and sealed the win for the Californian team. Robbie Keane was the scorer.

No goals for Beckham, on this, his last match in a Galaxy shirt.

The four MLS titles for Galaxy were won in the years: 2002, 2005, 2011 and 2012.

Only Play-Off Matches Worth It?

I just don't see the point in what the Americans are doing with their MLS.

The teams who work very hard for almost one full season, winning their conferences, get nothing more but one less match in the play-off competition than the teams that finish fourth and fifth. And they also get absolutely nothing more when compared to the teams that finish second and third.

So, then, really, what's the incentive to play the best football, for most of the year, in MLS?
(Yeah, that's right, nothing! It was a rhetorical question. All the MLS teams need to do is make it to the play-offs, and then take it from there seriously and try to win the real thing.)

Consequently, I see very little reason to continue covering the regular MLS season.

So, yeah, there will be more MLS to talk about, with interest, but at the end of October.

Oh, and yeah, Happy Birthday, U.S. of A! Happy 4th of July!
