A Thin Line Between Lucky and Sucky

Sucky.

That's how one should describe Benfica's performance this season, thus far.

The favourites were very close to be inflicted a defeat, at home, by Gil Vicente Barcelos, which is not a great team by any stretch of the imagination.

It was, for the first almost 70 minutes, a lackluster game, brought to life by Viana's goal, for the guests, in the 69th minute.

And the hosts did very little, by their usual standards, to win that match.

But they got lucky. Extremely lucky.
Minutes 92 and 93 was when Benfica's goals were scored.
Right after equalizing, as a matter of fact, Benfica went on the attack once again, and found the net one more time. Bad defending (and mentality) from Gil Vicente, yes, but basically luck was what did it. It was luck that brought Benfica the first three points of the season.

Braga Crushes Gil Vicente

Braga managed to do something Porto and Benfica could not.

Right after their, some would say, shameful defeat against Besiktas in the Europa League, Braga succeeded in beating Gil Vicente, in Barcelos. And they won emphatically, too: 3-0. (Lima scored all three goals.)

Why is this so important?
Well, of course, because Gil Vicente just handed FC Porto their first league defeat of the season, at the same venue, 3-1, and not even Benfica, the unbeaten, run-away leaders of the Portuguese Liga Sagres, could beat Gil Vicente at their stadium.

Nice achievement, but possibly meaningless unless Porto stumbles more than Braga in the remaining matchdays, and The Archbishops manage to snatch the second Champions League spot away from the Oporto giants.

Big Loss for Porto

FC Porto lost at Gil Vicente today. It's Porto's first internal defeat of the season.

Benfica had dropped points at Gil Vicente, too: 2-2, on August 12, 2011.
But, wow, Porto sure put on a shameful display in this match! Down 3-0, in under 55 minutes...
Vitor Pereira should hide, in shame.

Now, the Lisbon fans who support Benfica can be extremely happy that they see their team 5 points ahead of their northern rivals.
Benfica also remains the only undefeated team in the Primeira Liga.

Gil Vicente only suffered one defeat at home this season, so far: 0-3 against Nacional, 3 weeks ago.

The goals:
1-0

2-0

3-0

3-1
