The fans of SL Benfica had been waiting for a win for quite a while.
They are probably very happy that it came now, at least.
After losing a lot of ground in the Portuguese league, Benfica managed to avoid seeing themselves eliminated from top European football competition, a hypothesis that surely many were fearing.
It was a tense first half, but Maxi Pereira eventually scored, on the stroke of half-time, after a prolonged attack from the Portuguese giants.
At this point, they would have been in, on the away-goals rule, anyway.
But Zenit was extremely ineffectual, they pressed very little, and Benfica eventually scored the insurance goal, albeit in injury time.
Nelson Oliveira finished a nice counter-attack, just as the match was about to be wrapped up, anyway.
So, two goals in extra time see Benfica Lisbon through to the quarter-finals, after a match where no team played really well.
