Comedies of Errors from the Top Two in France

Both Olympique Marseille and Olympique Lyonnais got quite a beating on Sunday.

At 14:00 CET, at Valenciennes, Marseille seemed to have forgotten how to defend. The first goal, scored by Danic in the 16th minute, showed their inability to defend free kicks. And the second (in minute 34) and fourth (63), scored by Le Tallec, made their defensive marking look very poor. But it was Mandanda's amazing blunder (39) that truly made Marseille look like an amateur side.

So, one of the three remaining teams with a perfect record in their respective leagues falters. (And badly.) Barcelona and Bayern remain.

Seven hours after Marseille screwed up so badly, Lyon, formerly second in the standings, faltered, too. Their players were probably irritated by their own inability to break down Bordeaux's defenses as time was winding down.

In the 65th minute, Lyon defender Lovren deflected a ball past his own goalkeeper (while seeming quite worried about not handling the ball but not at all aware that not blocking the ball with all your might could spell trouble for those behind you).
In any case, Bordeaux went up 1-0, and they would not give that up.

On the contrary, they got a second goal, in the 82nd minute, when two Lyon defenders failed to intervene properly and Diabate was able to get in a header that sneaked past the goalkeeper and the bemused defenders.

So, this was a big matchday for Paris Saint-Germain, it seems.
Ancelotti's team now sits only three points behind Marseille, and one ahead of Lyon. They are in second, of course.

Samp no Longer Unbeaten

Sampdoria - Napoli was the derby of this matchday, in Italy, despite other encounters which included Juventus - Roma and Inter - Fiorentina.

Both Ciro Ferrara 's team and Mazzarri's Napoli were unbeaten prior to this match.

Sampdoria seemed to press a little more, being the home side, and everything. And not just after going down to a Cavani penalty (in minute 67), awarded for a somewhat weak foul. (I specifically state the exaggerated reaction of referee Tagliavento to the infraction, because Gastaldello also got the red card for it.)

After being penalized with one point in the standings, Sampdoria again encounters bad luck. But, despite the loss, they are still in the top five in Serie A. And they could go again up to third next weekend, because both Inter and Lazio have very tough matches. (Inter has to face AC Milan, and Lazio will have to go to the in-form Pescara, which managed two wins out of their last two matches and went unbeaten in their last three. Of course, Doria would have to win at Chievo for that to have a chance of happening, on the other hand.)

Lucky, Lucky, Lucky!...

Sevilla did not deserve to lose to Barcelona.
They played really well.

But they were also stupid for playing the offside trap in the 93rd minute. (See the highlights, for the David Villa goal.)
However, the fact is Barcelona also had unbelievable luck in the dying moments of this match.
The second Fabregas goal, to give the best example, started from a blatant hand-ball, which happened right next to referee Lahoz. What the hell?

Why do the big teams always get these amazing breaks?
You never hear that Bayern Munich, for example, lost a match in the 90th minute because, let's say, some player from Freiburg made a hand-ball that the referee did not see and then went on to score the winning goal.
It's always the big teams - or, maybe, the teams that have an in with the referee - who benefit from such errors and oversights.

Did Barca really need such a lucky win, considering their form and the overall strength of their team?

I mean, wow, from 1-2 in minute 88, to 3-2 at the final whistle...
The mark of true champions, or unfair and irritating good luck? Hmm. Did Barca totally outplay Sevilla? Did they deserve to score that second goal, with the hand-ball advantage?
(Or maybe this is part some kind of divine, let's call it, compensation for Barcelona losing all but one lesser trophy last season.)

The deserved outcome of this game should have put them only three points ahead of Atletico Madrid, with Atletico still to play, on Sunday.

Big Trouble in Little Rio Ave

Despite the fact that they had beaten Sporting, a few matchdays before, almost nobody thought Rio Ave would be capable of beating FC Porto, too, even though they were playing at home.

But Rio Ave almost did just that.

Porto took the lead early in the match, through a very easy goal by Miguel Lopes. (He scored in the empty net, because the goalkeeper was left struggling by a free kick effort that had rebounded off the post.)
And it seemed that Porto was on track for the win, especially when they almost put in a second goal, in the 69th minute. They hit the bar with that one.

But, then, Tarantini decided to take matters into his own hands. He fought for a ball maybe harder than everybody expected, and managed to score a scrappy, but very good, goal in the 78th.
And, eight minutes later, came an amazing shot by the same Tarantini, that silenced the away supporters. 2-1.

To their credit, Porto did not give up, and they did succeed in grabbing one point from this match, in the 90th minute, through a header by Jackson Martinez (which might not have happened if the Rio Ave defender marking the Porto forward had been an inch taller).

So, Porto only draws level on points with Benfica, after this result, but has to settle for second spot, courtesy of one more goal scored by Benfica.

23 Years Later...

1989 was the last time when Tottenham beat Manchester United at Old Trafford.

And very few people expected the team with the worst pound-for-pound, let's say, record against Man. U., in the Premier League, to do what they did this Saturday evening.

But the team run by Andre Villas-Boas did just that.
(And the young Portuguese coach celebrated each goal, and the final whistle, as if he had just won a big trophy.)

Man. U. played atrociously in the first half. Nobody can deny that. 2-0 for Spurs at half time was a deserved scoreline.
When Man. U. came back from 0-2 to 1-2 and from 1-3 to 2-3 very quickly, after the interval, though, most people probably said "Oh! Here we go...", in expectation to see another one of Man. U. 's traditional so-spectacular-that-they-cannot-be-believed-to-be-thoroughly-deserved comebacks.

But such a comeback never materialized.
And all credit goes to Tottenham for not losing their cool, even after Kagawa's goal (which made it 2-3, in the 54th minute). Maybe Villas-Boas is doing a lot of things right over there, at that team. (And reporters should quit taunting him about the Friedel-vs-Lloris situation, which is not such a big deal.)

Manchester United fans were probably expecting to see their team leapfrog Chelsea in the standings, just a few hours earlier. Instead, they were treated to seeing their team fall to four points behind their Stamford-Bridge rivals.

Oh, and did you see Alex Ferguson bitching about those four minutes of extra time that, I'm paraphrasing, did not give his team a chance to win this match?... What a cry-baby!

Another Surprise Result in the Turkish League

After Orduspor downed Galatasaray, on Friday, it was Kasimpasa's turn to score another surprise win for the minnows of the Turkish SuperLiga.

The name of the winner of this match does not say much to football fans, but Kasimpasa does not have a weak team at the present time.
Among their notable players is a certain Kalu Uche, formerly from Almeria and Espanyol, who scored the first goal of this match with a delicate volley that made the Fenerbahce defenders look unrefined and unprepared.
The second goal was also a good one, in terms of breaking down the Fener defense.

After Orduspor, Kasimpasa also inches closer to Galatasaray. Both the team from Ordu and Istanbul's Kasimpasa are now on 12 points, just one behind the leaders.
Fenerbahce, by contrast, still has only 9 points. And they're going to play Besiktas next.

Chelsea Stays Top

On Friday, a friend of mine asked me "Who do you think 's going to win between Arsenal and Chelsea?" I said "Chelsea [...] Chelsea better win." He himself is a Chelsea fan, but did not really believe in Chelsea that much, maybe because of the results from last year, so he insisted to add to the discussion that Arsenal was playing at home.

So what?

What I don't believe, though, is that Arsenal could ever be a title contender anymore. (And I told my friend that, too.)
Yes, it's very early, but I would be ready to bet that Arsenal will not win the title this year. I also do not see them winning any of the upcoming couple of seasons, either, or even any later upcoming ones, also.
Arsenal... Tottenham... Newcastle... whatever...
If any of these teams should find themselves atop the table, for some duration, it is only because of an unbelievable streak of coincidences, and they will not, and can not, stay there in the long run.
The way these clubs are run is extremely faulty, from the standpoint of a true winner, and that's why you can exclude these teams as title contenders.
(Oh, and Liverpool?... Well, they should consider themselves lucky if they finish above Everton, Aston Villa and the like. So, I'm not even talking about Liverpool anymore. Champions League berths are beyond its capabilities.)

There are only three teams with real ambitions in the Premier League:
Manchester United, Chelsea (who have to still do a lot of work in rebuilding their team, in my opinion), and now, seemingly, Manchester City.
That's it.

No team that sells its best player willingly to (supposedly )its biggest rival - yes, I do mean van Persie, damn it! - is a team that should be made fun of. And it is not a team who has its heart set on competing against said rival.

But, getting back to Arsenal, I wasn't exactly impressed that they stole some points from Man. City, the previous matchday. But Arsenal, I guess, is going to spoil some things for some teams. Just like Everton. Or QPR, ha, ha, why not?
With that in mind, many congratulations to Chelsea for managing to avoid what City could not.
Maybe Mancini's squad will live to rue those dropped points against Wenger's men.

On the other hand, Arsenal made more errors in their match against Chelsea, than at the Etihad stadium. Torres (in minute 20) and Mata (53) managed to speculate some of those weaknesses, emphatically, and won the game for Di Matteo 's team, in spite of a spectacular effort from Gervinho (42) that pulled things level before half time.
Even so, Arsenal could have kept a point, if Giroud had done better with his shot at the death, after rounding Chelsea's goalkeeper.

But the most important fact is that, thanks to this impressive (- I guess -) win, Chelsea stays top. Let's hope they can maintain their rhythm, and for once offer an English-league title chase that involves more than just two teams, this year. (That would be nice.)
